BLAZES: Berkeley Lab Adventure Zone in Elementary Science
BLAZES is currently full for the 2011-2012 Academic Year.
Program Description
BLAZES is a structured program for 5th graders with alignment to the CA State Science Standards.
Students will:
- participate in group hands-on activities
- investigate the Periodic Table
- interact with scientists
- learn about careers in science, engineering and technology
- visit a laboratory to see powerful imaging instruments used in research
- see a liquid nitrogen demonstration explaining concepts in earlier activities

Audience
- Fifth grade school classes in the greater Bay Area
- Target audiences are public schools from the Berkeley, Oakland and West Contra Costa districts
- One adult chaperone required for each eight students
- Class or group size limited to 32 students
Key Dates
- Requests accepted: September 15, 2011
- Visits begin: November 1, 2011
- Visits end: May 3, 2012
Requesting a Visit
- Visit requests accepted September 15, 2011
- Visits scheduled on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays November-May
- To request a BLAZES Visit, a BLAZES Visit Request Form must be completed and returned to BLAZES@lbl.gov
- Be sure to check available dates before submitting a request.
Preparation/
Expectations
- Review the BLAZES Information Packet including:
- science content ideas for preparing students for the visit
- safety regulations for students and adults during the visit
- post-visit activities
After Your Visit
Complete BLAZES Student Evaluation
We encourage teachers to:
- Complete evaluation in school as a computer lab activity
- Assign as a homework assignment with parents allowing student to share the experience with a parent / guardian
- Follow up with a visit to the library, students can complete surveys online and explore concepts further through science books
