High School BLIPS: Berkeley Lab Internships for Precollegiate Scholars (Formerly HSSRPP)

Program Description

  • BLIPS is a seven-week internship which provides high school juniors with the opportunity to work with world class scientists or engineers on projects related to the Laboratory’s research programs. Assignments cover a wide range of laboratory tasks and assistance in basic research.
  • Interns will receive a stipend of $2,000.
  • Berkeley Lab does not provide housing for BLIPS interns
  • The Laboratory provides shuttle bus service throughout its 200-acre facility, and from the UC Campus and the Berkeley BART station. Berkeley Lab shuttle services are for official employee and guest use only.

Audience/Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  • A U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A high school junior in the 2009-2010 academic year (Transcripts must reflect student is currently a junior)
  • Attending school in one of these San Francisco Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma

Selection Process

Selection will be based upon the candidate’s:

  • Interest in science
  • Academic grades
  • Recommendations
  • Availability of placements at the Lab

Preference will be given to students from the Oakland, Berkeley, and West Contra Costa County school districts.

Requirements

In addition to their research assignments, interns will:

  • Write a one-paragraph biography
  • Write a scientific abstract
  • Prepare and give a presentation at the end of the program
  • Participate in a variety of workshops
  • Attend lectures and seminars

Students must attend the entire program and meet Laboratory standards in every aspect of their work.
