Assignments / Deliverables
Summer 2009

Students participating in the Undergraduate Laboratory Research Internship programs at LBNL have a number of program-centered assignments. Some of these are designed to aid the student and the mentor in developing a research assignment and keeping it on track. There are other assignments at the end of the summer that will enhance your professional skills.

Most assignments are to be completed by all students, but there are a few that vary depending on which program you are in. (Please note: the PST program includes CalTeach and STAR students.)

6/11 Complete General Employee Radiation Training (GERT) and EHS-10 Introduction to Safety online. Required from all participants before arriving at the Lab.
6/12 Research Work Plan:
Students and mentors are asked to meet and work out general assignments, expectations, and deliverables, then sign and return the research work plan form. Research work plans are to be turned in at the end of the noon "Brown Bag" meeting. Required from all students.
6/12 EH&S MOU:
Students and mentors need to sign and submit this form today. EHS MOU forms are to be turned in at the end of the noon "Brown Bag" meeting. Required from all students.
6/13 DOE Pre-Survey: Students in DOE funded programs (SULI, CCI,PST, and FaST) need to complete the DOE online pre-experience survey.
You will need to log in at Edulink to do this. You will need your the user name and password you used when you applied to the program. Please contact Nikki Benjamin or Robbie Jackson if you have forgotten yours.

6/13 JHAs must be completed by today. While JHA system is unavailable, please use mentor's "Hazard Profile" instead. Required from all students.

6/18 Short Paper:
This is a 2-3 page paper where the student briefly describes the nature of the work the research group is doing, the significance of the work, and the student's role in the research.
Guidelines for the paper and an example are available.
Submit your paper electronically, either in Word or PDF format, to Clyde Lewis. Required from all students.
8/11 Poster Session. Required from all students.

Thursday "Brown Bags" In addition to the above assignments, students should plan to attend weekly Brown Bag meetings. Generally, these will be held at noon on Thursdays, and students are encouraged to bring lunch.
Writing Groups CSEE Writing Coach Clyde Lewis will be facilitating hour-long weekly meetings to assist students, which will include read-arounds and peer critique as well as one-on-one support and feedback. Writing Groups will be established at the first Brown Bag meeting.
Surveys &
Evaluations
DOE funded students must complete a pre-survey and a post-survey for DOE. This is to be completed online; log-in information will be provided. In addition, CSEE requires all participating students to complete exit questionnaires. These surveys and questionnaires are all requirements of the program.
